Greetings 4,980 El Sayulero Readers,

Its so great to be back in Sayulita where it seems nothing and yet everything has changed over the summer. New roads are in place, while others are under construction. Fresh plants have been placed around town, while others did not make it through the summer season. The widened roads have created more parking places, yet I have never seen so few parking spots this early in the season.

Sayulita is still one of the greatest places on earth and we are all looking forward to another fantastic season.

Back in July, a reporter from Portland Monthly contacted me about doing a possible article on Sayulita. We spoke for about an hour and I gave him all the information I could plus highly encouraged him to come on down for himself. Esta maravilloso estar de vuelta en Sayulita, donde parece que nada y sin embargo todo ha cambiado durante el verano. Los nuevos caminos están en su lugar, mientras que otros están destrozados. Las plantas frescas se han colocado alrededor de la ciudad, mientras que todas las palmas en la entrada principal (nuevo) han muerto. Las carreteras se amplió han creado más plazas de aparcamiento, pero nunca he visto el centro de la ciudad de adoquines tan llena de coches aparcados locales.

SayuLimpia Recycling Kicks Off New Campaign for Zero Waste

Under the new leadership of Monica Jimenez, the regional Sayulita recycling program will soon be taking on even greater feats and expanding its scope in a new "zero waste" campaign. Starting November 1st, a new system of waste separation will be implemented in the village. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be designated pick-up days for recyclables only, such as plastic bottles and bags, glass bottles, aluminum cans, paper and cardboard. Also considered reusable waste and acceptable for pick-up on these days will be wire, CDs or discs, clothing, fabric, toys, and wood. Whereas Monday, Wednesday, and Friday will now be "green" days, or days on which organic compost material will be picked-up. This means that all leftover food and vegetables, bones, herbs, tea, and coffee can be disposed of and then removed on these days of the week. Non-recyclable and non-organic materials will still be disposed of as usual and picked up by the municipal service.

Since this expanded program presents a difficult task for the recycling collection team, Monica is asking Sayulita residents to help out in keeping waste organized for more efficient removal. The best thing for people to do is to start a system within their own homes of separating waste between organic/compost and recyclable materials, and trash. Then, the night before designated collection days, residents should bring their waste to the nearest pick-up area and place it in the correct bin. "Blue" bins will be for recyclable materials only, while "green" bins will be for organics, and "black" for usual trash. The other option, would be for residents to bring their recyclables and compostables directly to the recycling depot located on the Punta Mita Highway, one kilometer west of Highway 200 and the turnoff to Sayulita.

The Sayulita recycling project, known as SayuLimpia, was founded in 2007 and is part of larger efforts coordinated between Sayulita, San Pancho, and Lo de Marcos to reduce waste production and increase recycling here in the villages of coastal Nayarit. Monica, who recently stepped up as Sayulita regional leader after ChocoBanana's Tracie Willis stepped down, states many important objectives for the continuing SayuLimpia efforts. Among the goals of the project is to educate the public about the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling so as to create a greater environmental consciousness in the community. To this end, Monica hopes to organize cultural events and fundraisers to both generate more awareness and funds for the program. This will all be part of the new, more efficient color-coded collection system and wider distribution of recycling bins. Monica even hopes to create one enormous collective compost for all organic waste in Sayulita, as part of SayuLimpia's important mission to make the town a model of ecological awareness and activity.

As Sayulita grows rapidly in population and therefore waste production, these recycling and composting efforts are extremely important for protecting Sayulita from future ecological problems. Not only does a more organized and expansive recycling program mean great improvement for the beauty of our town, but it also will mean for increased conservation of the surrounding natural beauty--such as the rivers, beaches, sea, and also the tropical jungle of the Sierra Vallejo that in fact has the 5th largest biodiversity of flora, fauna, and marine life in the world! And participating in the recycling program is not just something we all can do for our town, but it in fact is for our entire planet. As Monica would like to remind all of us, each plastic bottle tossed on our riverbeds or beaches, or even in a landfill, can take between 100 and 1000 years to decompose! A glass bottle will even take 3000 years to break down, so truly the importance of correctly disposing of and recycling such materials is vital, especially as Monica says "for the love and respect of the future generations." So, make sure to participate in the revamped recycling and composting project, to provide for a better Sayulita in the present and in the future!

Reciclaje SayuLimpia Empieza Nueva Campaña de Zero Desperdicios

Bajo el nuevo liderazgo de Monica Jimenez, el programa regional de reciclaje de Sayulita pronto expandirá su alcance y tomará nuevos retos en una nueva campaña de "zero desperdicios". Empezando el 1 de noviempre, se implementará en el pueblo un nuevo sistema de separacion de basura. Los martes y jueves serán designados como dias para la recoleccion de solo reciclables, como botellas y bolsas de plastico, botellas de vidrio, latas de aluminio, papel y carton. Tambien considerados como materiales reciclables y aceptables para la recoleccion estos dias son alambre, discos o cds, ropa, tela, juguetes, y madera. Mientras los lunes, miercoles, y viernes serán ahora dias "verdes", o sea dias en los que los materiales organicas y compostables seran recogidos. Esto significa que se puede disponer de todos los sobres de comida y las verduras, los huesos, las hierbas, el te, y el cafe y seran recogidos durante estos dias de la semana. Se dispondran de todos los otros materiales no organicos y no-reciclables como normalmente y seran recogidos por el servicio municipal.

Ya que la expansion del programa de reciclaje presenta una tarea muy dificil para el equipo de recoleccion, Monica esta pidiendo a los residentes de Sayulita que ayuden a mantener organizados los desperdicios para una recoleccion mas eficaz. La mejor cosa que podemos hacer es empezar un sistema de separacion de desperdicios dentro de nuestras propias casa, entre los materiales organicos/compostables y reciclables, y la basura normal. Despues, la noche antes de los dias designados de recoleccion, los residentes deben llevar sus desperdicios a la area de recoleccion mas cercana y dejarlos en el contenedor debido. Los contenedores "azules" seran solo para los reciclables, mientras los contenedores "verdes" seran para organicos, y los "negros" para basura normal. La otra opcion, seria que los residentes trajeran sus reciclables y "compostables" directamente al centro de reciclaje sobre la carretera a Punta Mita, un kilometro al oeste de la carretera 200 y la entrada a Sayulita.

El proyecto de reciclaje de Sayulita, conocido SayuLimpia, fue fundado en 2007 y es parte de los esfuerzos generales coordinados entre Sayulita, San Pancho, y Lo de Marcos para reducir la produccion de desperdicios y aumentar el reciclaje aqui en los pueblos de la costa de Nayarit. Mientras Sayulita crece rapido en poblacion y asi entonces la produccion de desperdicios, estos esfuerzos para reciclar y hacer composta son extremadamente importantes para proteger a Sayulita de problemas ecologicos en el futuro. No solo significa un programa de reciclaje mas organizado y expandido una gran mejoria para la belleza de nuestro pueblo, pero tambien significa el aumento de conservacion de la belleza natural a nuestro alrededor--como los rios, las playas, el mar, y tambien la selva tropical de la Sierra de Vallejo que de hecho es la quinta mas grande biosfera de flora, fauna, y vida marina en todo el mundo! Y participar en el programa de reciclaje no solo es algo que podemos hacer para nuestro pueblo, pero de hecho es para nuestro planeta entero. Como Monica quiesiera acordarnos a todos, cada botella de plastico tirada en nuestros rios o playas toma entre 100 y 1000 años para degradarse! Una botella de vidrio hasta tomara 3000 años para descomponerse, entonces la importancia de correctamente disponer de y reciclar tales materiales es realmente vital, sobre todo como dice Monica "para el amor y respeto para las futuras generaciones." Asi que, asegura de participar en el proyecto renovado de reciclar y composta, para proveer para un mejor Sayulita en el presente y en el futuro!

SayulitAnimals Warns of Intentional Animal Poisoning

Over the last two months, SayulitAnimals has recieved reports of five dogs being poisoned on Guayaba Street, just across the river from their clinic. Four of the five dogs were household pets with owners, who were just out and about in their neighborhood. What these reports attest to is that poisoning animals, including domestic animals like cats and dogs, with rat poison, is still a common practice in the community. SayulitAnimals believes that--despite the obvious risks to our environment, children, and pets--some people continue to use poison in an attempt to manage overpopulation of animals in Sayulita.

Considering that two of the poisoned dog bodies were reported to have been tossed in the river, this practice presents a serious concern and threat to everyone in the community. As SayulitAnimals explains, poisoning is a short-term solution to a larger issue at hand. Sterilization, on the other hand, is the only way to successfully and safely reduce the overpopulation of cats and dogs. What is needed therefore, is the continued education in Sayulita that the older ways of dealing with overpopulation are in fact unsafe, cruel, and no longer necessary considering that SayulitAnimals provides a free sterilization service.

In terms of protecting ourselves and our pets from the poison that might be out on our streets, SayulitAnimals suggests these precautions: Be aware of plastic bags with fish or meat in the streets because they could likely be left to attract animals, and be covered in poison. Keep your dog on a leash and/or in your sight, and don't let it eat scraps. In the case that your pet may have already come into contact with poison, look for signs of internal bleeding, such as pale gums, cold temperature, and blood from the nose and/or in the urine and feces.

With the support of the local government, SayulitAnimals has placed notices around Sayulita warning of the risks associated with placing poison in the community. Yet every year, especially during the summer months, the poisoning continues to take place. Therefore, SayulitAnimals is asking that everyone help to spread the word that above all poisoning animals is in fact dangerous for our children, our pets, and our natural surroundings, and it serves no legitimate purpose. If people are frustrated by seeing stray cats and dogs, they should instead be encouraged to participate in the SayuliAnimals free spay and neuter program, instead of practicing cruelty on local animals, introducing lethal substances into the ecosystem, and polluting the environment while putting us all at risk. SayulitAnimals' message is that "sterilization is the only successful way to reduce overpopulation".

SayulitAnimals Advierte Sobre Envenenamiento de Animales

Durante los pasados dos meses, la clinica veterinaria SayulitAnimals ha recibido reportes sobre cinco perros que se habian envenenado sobre la calle Guayaba, justo al otro lado del rio de la clinica. Cuatro de los cinco perros eran mascotas domesticas con dueños, quienes solo estaban de paseo en el barrio. Lo que demuestran estos reportes es que todavia se practica el envenenamiento de animales domesticos como gatos y perros con veneno para ratas en esta comunidad. SayulitAnimals cree que--a pesar de los riesgos obvios para nuestro ambiente, nuestros niños, y mascotas--algunas personas siguen usando veneno en un intento de controlar la sobrepoblacion de animales en Sayulita.

Sin embargo, sobre todo considerando que reportan que dos de los perros envenenados fueron tirados en el rio, esta costumbre presenta una grave preocupacion y amenaza para todos nosotros en la comunidad. Como explica SayulitAnimals, el uso de veneno es una solucion temporaria para una question mas general. La esterilizacion, por el otro lado, es la unica manera de mas profundamente y seguramente reducir la sobrepoblacion de gatos y perros. Lo que se necesita, entonces, es continuar la educacion en Sayulita sobre como las viejas maneras de controlar la sobrepoblacion son de hecho inseguras, crueles, y ya no necesarias ahora que la clinica SayulitAnimals ofrece el servicio gratuito de esterilizacion.

En terminos de proteger a nosotros mismos y a nuestras mascotas del veneno que puede estar en nuestras calles, SayulitAnimales sugiere tomar estas precauciones: Sé consciente de bolsas de plastico con pescado o carne adentro porque podrian haber sido dejados para atraer a animales, y podrian estar cubiertas de veneno. Sin embargo, cada año y mas durante los meses de verano, el envenenamiento sigue pasando. Es por eso que SayulitAnimals está pidiendo a todos que ayuden a difundir sobre todo la informacion de que el envenenamiento de animales es de hecho peligroso para nuestros niños, nuestras mascotas, y nuestro entorno natural, y no sirve un proposito legitimo. Si las personas están frustradas de ver tantos gatos y perros callejeros, en cambio deberian participar en el programa gratuito de esterilizaciones de SayulitAnimals, en vez de ejercer crueldad en los animales, introducir substancias mortales en el ecosistema, y contaminar el ambiente mientras ponen a riesgo a todos. El mensaje de SayulitAnimales es que "la esterilizacion es la unica manera exitosa de reducir la sobrepoblacion."

Halloween and Day of the Dead
in Sayulita

The Mexican custom of El Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead may sound much like the U.S. custom of Halloween. After all, the celebration traditionally starts at midnight the night of Oct. 31 and goes through November 3rd; and the festivities are abundant in images related to death. But the customs have different origins, and their attitudes toward death are different: In the typical Halloween festivities, death is something to be feared, but in el dia de los muertos, death or at least the memories of those who have died is something to be celebrated.

In Sayulita, due to the foreign influence here, Halloween is now celebrated. .For the kids this Halloween in Sayulita, the plaza will quickly fill with children, many is costume, to receive the candy given out to them by volunteers. For the adults, bars have costume contests including the new Yo Yo Mo's Sports bar, where Manager Corin Alarcon, says that they will be giving away prizes of Gift Certificates valued at 1000 pesos, 500 pesos and 250 pesos for the best costume. They will also have live music and treats for the kids.

For the day of Dead Celebrations, the main plaza will display typical Day of the Dead Alters begining on November 1st and 2nd in connection with the Catholic holiday of All Saints' Day which occurs on November 1st and All Souls' Day which occurs on November 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves at Los Muertos with these as gifts. Visitors are encouraged to take only photos of the very personal tributes.

La costumbre mexicana de El Dia de los Muertos puede sonar parecido a la costumbre de EE.UU. de Halloween. Despues de todo, la celebracion tradicional comienza a la medianoche la noche del 31 de octubre y dura hasta el 3 de noviembre y las festividades son abundantes en las imagenes relacionadas con la muerte. Sin embargo, las costumbres tienen diversos origenes, y sus actitudes hacia la muerte son diferentes: en la fiesta tipica de Halloween, la muerte es algo para ser temido. Sin embargo, en el Dia de los Muertos, la muerte o al menos los recuerdos de aquellos que han muerto es algo para celebrar.

En Sayulita, debido a la influencia extranjera, Halloween se celebra de diferentes maneras, aunque la costumbre tipica de ir de puerta a puerta pidiendo dulces con el "truco o el tratamiento" no se practica aqui. Para los ninos, ya sea en disfraz o no, al atardecer la plaza principal se llena de ninos y las personas que trabajan como voluntarios repartiendo caramelos. Para los adultos, muchos bares tienen concursos de disfraces incluyendo el nuevo bar Yo Yo Mo Deportes, antes del puente, donde el Administrador del bar Corin Alarcon dice que estaran regalando premios de certificados de regalo valorados en 1000 pesos, 500 pesos y 250 pesos para el mejor disfraz. Tambien tendran musica en vivo y obsequios para los ninos.

Los visitantes son animados a tomar fotos solo de los tributos muy personales.

¡Que Madre! Sayulita by Andrea Villarrubia

Welcome to ¡Que Madre! Sayulita, a new column celebrating Sayulita family life! Having seen Sayulita from different lenses through the years, I especially love the view from the family side of the tracks. With over a year of motherhood under my belt, I've come to cherish Sayulita and Mexico in countless new ways, and through this column I hope to share a bit of that with you each week.

This weekend is full of family love and fun with both Dia de los Muertos and Halloween. Halloween is a fairly recent phenomenon in Mexico, and it's becoming more popular each year. On a visit in 2003, I remember a small group of niños running into El Tigre chanting "¡Queremos Halloween!" ("We want Halloween!"). They weren't dressed up, but they knew how to score some candy. Fast forward six years and you'll find the plaza crowded with costumed wee ones and parents socializing and trick-or-treating at local businesses. Being a parent puts a whole new sheen on Halloween, and this year we are super excited to carve pumpkins, dress up, and hit the town with our little "Max." Let the wild rumpus start!

A time of love and reverence, Dia de los Muertos is a perfect opportunity to spend time as a family celebrating those that have left us, and their lessons and love that live on in our hearts. The past few years in Sayulita, there have been beautiful community altars in our plaza to leave offerings for the dead. I'll be celebrating the spirits of my Grandmothers Mabel and Jeannette, who taught me so much about family and love, and whose memories I must keep alive for their Great-Grandson Maximo.

My Fall Favorites this week: getting crafty with my son; walking together collecting rocks; looking forward to a family breakfast at Rollie's this Sunday!

¡Bienvenidos a ¡Qué Madre! Sayulita, una nueva columna celebrando la vida familiar en Sayulita! He conocido a Sayulita desde muchas perspectivas a través de los años, me gusta especialmente la vista familiar. Con más de un año ser madre, continuo a apreciar Sayulita y México en un nuevas maneras cada dia, y con esta columna espero a compartir un poco de eso con ustedes cada semana.

Este fin de semana está lleno de amor y diversión familiar con los dos Dia de los Muertos y Halloween. Halloweenes un fenómeno reciente en México, y es más popular cada año.
Recuerdo en 2003, que vimos un pequeño grupo de niños en el restaurante El Tigre, cantando "¡Queremos Halloween!" (en lugar del ingles "Trick or Treat!"). Los niños no estaban vestidos, pero sabían cómo conseguir dulces. Seis años despues, y la plaza está llena de chicos en trajes y sus padres juntando en la plaza para "trick-or-treating" a las empresas locales. Ser madre pone un brillo nuevo en los festividades de Halloween y este año estamos super emocionados de esculpir calabazas, vestir, y celebrar con nuestra pequeña "Max."

Un tiempo de amor y reverencia, Día de los Muertos es una oportunidad perfecta para pasar tiempo con su familia celebrando a aquellos que nos han dejado, y sus lecciones y el amor que viven en nuestros corazones. En los últimos años en Sayulita, se han altares hermosas en nuestra plaza, para dejar ofrendas a los muertos. Este año voy a celebrar los espíritus de mis Abuelas Mabel y Jeannette, que me enseñaron mucho sobre la familia y el amor, y quien sus memorias tengo que mantener viva para su bisnieto Máximo.

1. Nacido en Sayulita? De hecho naci en Santiago, Mexico y creci en la ciudad capital de Tepic. Me mudé a Sayulita hace 10 años cuando tenia 19 años.

2. Family History and Information?My mother Teresa passed away recently and was a great teacher for me. She taught me strength and how to build but not break. She raised 8 children by herself. My family in Sayulita includes my older brother Ramon, who is 35, my sister Sandy who is 33, my sister Nancy who is 31, my youngest brother Goyo who is 21 and my youngest sister Densy who is 20 years old. I also have a wonderful two year old son Ethan who I consider my mentor.
2. Historia de la familia? Mi madre Teresa falleció recientemente y fue una gran maestra para mí. Ella me enseñó la fuerza y la forma de construir, pero no romper. Crió 8 niños ella solo. Mi familia en Sayulita incluye a mi hermano Ramón, que tiene 35, mi hermana Sandy que tiene 33 años, mi hermana Nancy, de 31, mi hermano menor, Goyo, quien tiene 21 años, y mi hermana menor Densy quien tiene 20 años de edad. También tengo un maravilloso hijo de dos años de edad Ethan, quien yo considero mi mentor.

3. Education Level? I finished elementary and junior high school in Tepic. When I was 15 years old I went to San Diego, California and attended Mission Bay High School. My teachers were very focused on their students and really made me learn English without an accent. Now I look back and really appreciate the effort and work the teachers there put in to my life.
3. Nivel de Educación? Terminé la primaria y escuela secundaria en Tepic. Cuando yo tenía 15 años me fui a San Diego, California y asistí a Mission Bay High School. Mis profesores concentraron mucho en sus alumnos y realmente me hicieron aprender Inglés sin acento. Ahora miro hacia atrás y realmente aprecio el esfuerzo y el trabajo de los maestros.

4. Business History? When I first came to live here I worked as a towel girl at the Costa Azul resort in San Pancho. After eight months, I was promoted to Manager of reservations and reception at the resort. They sent me during that time to a school to learn sales. After the resort I worked for Mr. Min Cavanauskas at Costa Custudia and he taught me everything I know. I would commute three days a week to the San Blas area selling real estate. Eventually I came to live and work in Sayulita at Garcia Realty for a few months and then became pregnant with my son. Currently I own my own business called Sayulita 411- Home Helpers.

4. Historial de trabajo? Cuando vine a vivir aquí, habia trabajado como una chica de toallas en el balneario de Costa Azul, en San Pancho. Después de ocho meses, me ascendieron a Gerente de reservas y recepción en el hotel. Ellos me enviaron durante ese tiempo a una escuela para aprender sobre ventas. Después del hotel, trabajé para el Sr. Min Cavanauskas en Costa Custudia y él me enseñó todo lo que sé ahora. 5. What is your favorite part of living in Sayulita? I love the fact that everything is so close. I just get a feel of community, and the energy from that is really hard to put into words. I feel lucky to be able to raise my son here.

6. What are your future personal plans in 5 years? I would eventually like to continue in Real Estate, specifying in a specific area like Ejido property or financing, etc... I also love politics and would like to explore that more. As far as projects go, I would eventually like to write a book called," The Noise", about how gossip effects small communities.
6. ¿Cuáles son tus planes de futuro personal en 5 años? Finalmente me gustaría continuar en el sector inmobiliario, especificializando en un área específica como propiedad ejidal o de financiación, etc ... También me encanta la política y me gustaría explorar esto más. En cuanto a los proyectos, eventualmente me gustaría escribir un libro llamado "El Ruido", sobre cómo los chismes afectan las pequeñas comunidades.

7. What do you feel are some changes you would like to see in Sayulita? I feel that the only thing I would like to see are the streets being reconstructed, as they take such a toll on cars and some aren't even drivable. I feel that Sayulita has it's own personality where you can take it or leave it. I love that.
7. ¿Qué crees que son algunos cambios que le gustaría ver en Sayulita? Siento que lo unico que quisiera que cambiara son las calles y su reconstruccion, como hacen mucho daño a los coches y algunos hasta son impasables. Siento que Sayulita tiene su propia personalidad y te puede gustar o no gustar. Me encanta esto.

8. What is something you would tell a first time visitor to Sayulita? I would say that it is a very bohemiian village where Hemimngway and Kerouac would feel at home. It is a very safe and relaxing place with, I feel, generous energy for everyone.
8. ¿Qué es algo que le dirías a alguien que visita Sayulita por primera vez? Yo diría que es un pueblo muy bohemio donde Hemmingway y Kerouac se sintirian como en casa. Es un lugar muy seguro y relajante, con, yo creo, energía generosa para todos.
